Bridging Expertise: Nepal-Finland Collaboration for Stronger Teacher Education

Finland’s well-regarded education system and Nepal’s local expertise come together in TECSES, as the project strengthens teacher education and improves learning outcomes through collaboration. Funded by the European Union and Finland, TECSES operates at the federal level to enhance teacher training and support Nepal’s education system. 

Two key figures in this effort are Dr. Marko van den Berg from the University of Helsinki and Krishna Bhujel from Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. Their knowledge and experience help ensure the project’s impact. 

Dr. Marko van den Berg has over 20 years of experience in teacher education at the University of Helsinki. As a researcher, university lecturer, and teacher educator, his previous work includes His previous work includes teacher training, curriculum development, and participation in international education projects in countries such as Somalia, Mozambique, Pakistan, and Ukraine. 

"Quality teacher education is the foundation of a strong education system, and well-trained teachers are essential for quality education. By combining research-based methods with local expertise, we can create sustainable improvements in teaching and learning," says Dr. van den Berg. 

Krishna Bhujel has dedicated years to Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, contributing to national education policies and programs. As TECSES’ National Project Director, he plays a crucial role in guiding the project within Nepal’s education system, ensuring that its activities support the country’s goals for teacher development and children's rights. 

"Strengthening teacher education in Nepal is not just about training teachers –  it’s about empowering them to shape the future of our children. TECSES is helping us build a system that supports both educators and students," emphasizes Bhujel. 

Together, they help TECSES connect research with practice and promote international cooperation to improve teacher education in Nepal. TECSES continues to support teachers and students, helping to create lasting improvements in Nepal’s education system. Stay tuned for more updates on the project’s progress.
